Want to Get Your Workplace Moving in 2012?

FREE Pedometer Challenge

Paths for All, Walk Glasgow and Health at Work are offering you and your workplace the chance to take part in the Walk at Work Step Count Challenge.

Over 8 weeks teams of 5 will record their daily step counts using pedometers.  You'll get tips and ideas on how to create a virtual journey by counting your steps and converting them into miles. There will also be some fantastic prize draws and challenges to keep you going. There is also a blog that will be updated with the latest news, your stories and competitions.

This year’s challenge begins on the 5th March and will run for 8 weeks.

Registration forms should be returned by Friday 17th February. Spaces and pedometers will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

FREE Literacy Awareness Seminar

Health at Work are holding a FREE half day seminar for Employers, Managers and HR Professionals from organisations across Greater Glasgow and Clyde (except NHS GG&C employees).

The seminar aims to:

  •  Increase knowledge about the reality of having literacy difficulties and its impact in the workplace e.g. recruitment, health and safety issues.
  • Explore sensitive and appropriate ways to respond to adults with literacy difficulties in the workplace.

Date: Friday 24th February

Time: 9:30am - 12:30pm

Venue: Festival Business Centre, 150 Brand St, Glasgow, G51 1DH

FREE Health at Work Green Gym

BTCV Scotland and Glasgow Life are working with Healthy Working Lives to offer organisations in the North East of Glasgow the opportunity to take part in a Health at Work Green Gym.

Organisations will be able to improve the local environment, support community projects and also take steps to improve the health of their employees by taking part in regular Green Gym activities. The activities could include health walks, tree planting, path maintenance or gardening.

Organisations must be based in the North East of Glasgow and be taking part in the Healthy Working Lives Award to be eligible.

Training Grants for Small Businesses

Flexible Training Opportunities gives Scottish businesses with less than 150 employees the opportunity to apply for up to £5,000 towards employee training costs, bringing real benefits to your business.  

This funding can be used to run health improvement activities and it can help small businesses to attain their HWL award and improve staff health.

Funding is available for up to 10 employees per business, and Skills Development Scotland will refund up to 50% of each episode of employee training,  to a maximum of £500 for each employee.

Campaigns for No Smoking Day 2012

Wednesday March 14th is No Smoking Day and the following resources will help you raise awareness of the event.

  • Quit & Win starts on No Smoking Day  -  and is designed to provide support and prize incentives to people on their journey to becoming smoke free.

The campaign runs for 12 weeks.
• Participants receive weekly emails/text messages with helpful tips.
• 4-weekly prize draws offer fantastic prizes
including
£300 worth of shopping vouchers, Cineworld tickets,
Free memberships to the Glasgow Club, Theatre
vouchers.

  • No Smoking Day Packs

These are available from Health at Work and consist of the following:

5 x A3 Posters
50 x Leaflets
10 x Balloons

FREE Energy Efficiency Workshop

In many organisations the greatest barrier to energy efficiency is lack of awareness. An energy awareness campaign could change that.

The Carbon Trust is offering a FREE one day workshop 'How to Run a Successful Awareness Campaign' on Tuesday 28th February in Glasgow.

iConnect: Encouraging Walking and Cycling to Work

Researchers at the University of Strathclyde are looking for volunteers to take part in discussion groups about walking and cycling to work. The discussions will cover topics such as:


• Barriers that currently put people off walking and cycling to work
• Views on upcoming infrastructure changes such as the Connect2 scheme that will complete the iconic Bridge-to-Nowhere over the M8.


The discussion groups will be open to any employee who volunteers, regardless of whether they currently walk or cycle to work and gift vouchers will be given to those who take part.

  • National Wear Red Day is Friday 24 February 2012

February is National Heart Month and it’s an ideal time to think about ways to look after your own heart health and to raise vital funds for BHF Scotland. There’s a really easy way to get involved. All you need to do is get your organisation to join in National Wear Red Day. Click here for further information.

  • Climate Week is 12th - 18th March 2012

Climate Week is Britain’s biggest climate change campaign. If you want to plan an activity to help accelerate action on climate change, visit the Climate Week website for ideas, resources and information.

  • Salt Awareness Week 26th March - 1st April 2012

Salt Awareness Week aims to help raise awareness about the damaging effect of too much salt. Salt Awareness Week 2012 will be focusing on stroke prevention due to the large amount of evidence linking salt, raised blood pressure and stroke risk. Click here for more information and resources.

Conferences in March 2012

  • Long Term Conditions Alliance Scotland National Conference Tuesday 27th March 2012.

'Employability, poverty and welfare reform', the 2012 LTCAS national conference, will explore employability and financial inclusion for people living with long-term conditions.

The event is free of charge, and is being organised in partnership with the Scottish Government.
