eNews from Hutchesons'

Welcome from the Senior Depute Rector

As if to mark the beginning of the end of exams, the weather has broken and I am sitting here with rays of beautiful sunshine streaming through my office window. I hope it lasts for the rest of June – and more! It was a very different picture on Monday 23 May when I ventured to Strathclyde Park with 17 boys in S3 as I introduced them to rowing. Thick grey clouds raced overhead and gale force winds strengthened throughout the day. We were planning to be inside most of the day, so it was not a disaster, but I felt sorry for those who had been dropped off the same bus in East Kilbride where they were to be windsurfing and canoeing. That same day we heard that it was warm and sunny in Morocco, it was warm and sunny in Barcelona and, even Munich there were cries of “It’s boiling here!”

Fortunately, the weather during the S3 Enrichment Week improved and the varied activities that took place were thoroughly enjoyed by all. I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff who were involved in helping on trips, outings or activities and to those who held the fort at school and covered absences. I believe it is a really worthwhile time and I hope you will enjoy reading about some of the activities below.

We are very near the end of term now and will be saying goodbye to 131 pupils in S6 as they move on to the next stage of their lives. We are very proud of them and wish them every success in the future. It was lovely that so many of them made it to the Celebration Ball and heard the touching tribute paid by Rory Morrice, Head Boy, on the Class of 2011. Aim high and have fun.

I hope you enjoy the final eNews of the 2010-2011 session. I would like to say a huge thank you to Karin Woods, who has worked on these letters since we began. She moves to Seattle with her family at the end of June. Good luck. We will miss you.

Mike Martin, Senior Depute Rector

From the Head of Primary

Alt

As we hurtle towards the end of this session, I would like to wish our Primary Seven pupils every success as they move on to their Senior School. It has been a pleasure getting to know them and I will follow their progress with interest and, I am sure, with pride.

We are school filled with children who are a pleasure to teach; who are full of fun, and are bursting will talents, skills and personality. At the end of the session, many children are recognised for their achievements at our formal Prize Giving ceremonies. However, I would also like to recognise the achievements, effort and commitment of all of our young pupils.

Everyone contributes to making the school what it is – well done!

It is a pleasure and a privilege to teach at Hutchie and I have enjoyed getting to know your children. I look forward to starting it all again in August! Have a lovely summer,

Christine Haughney, Depute Rector (Head of Primary)

'Handa's Surprise' at Kingarth Street

Alt

Kingarth Street felt like small and busy African village last Wednesday, when pupils and staff celebrated the world depicted in the children's book "Handa's Surprise", by Eileen Browne. Read more here!

Public Speaking at Kingarth Street

Alt

Last week, the Kingarth Street audience was spellbound and engaged by an array of fine orators. Speakers regaled us with stories that included pet requests, unusual parents and relatives, what the world would be like if they were Prime Minister, the Big Society and an embarrassing episode in a chip shop! The standard of all of the speeches was extremely impressive, both in content and performance, and all of our finalists are to be congratulated for their achievement. The winners were Flora Ritchie [P6U], who found many similarities between Hutchie and Hogwarts, and Isabel Woods [P5B], who told of her wish for a dog. Congratulations!
